The market town of Murnau on the Staffelsee lake in the heart of the Blue Land vacation region with a population of around 12,500 is an important economic centre. Once a centre of trade and commerce, fittingly, it is now also popular for shopping.
The Untermarkt and Obermarkt sections of the pedestrian zone in the centre of town are the perfect starting point for exploring this charming locality on the Staffelsee lake. Here and in the adjoining streets and alleys, you will find lively hustle and bustle: in art galleries and studios, in historic coffee houses and modern restaurants and in the lovingly renovated pedestrian zone itself. Around the town hall, shops invite you for a casual stroll. Browse through the shops and take a tour of the historic old town – either on your own or with a group and a guide.
Murnau boasts two attractive museums: the Schloßmuseum Murnau and the Münter Haus. In both, you can follow in the tracks of the Blue Rider. While the Münter Haus was once used as a summer residence by artists Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky, today, you will find their works of art along with numerous paintings of the Blue Rider movement in Schloßmuseum Murnau, a unique museum in a castle. At the same time, the museum also focusses on Murnau's history: regional arts and crafts, nature preserves, world literature and the activities of an important market town.
Murnau on the Staffelsee lake is located in the picture-perfect foothills of the Alps and forms the heart of the Blue Land, as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc affectionately called it. Just a few kilometres to the south, the impressive peaks of the Alps jut into the sky, and the royal palaces of Upper Bavaria are also in the immediate vicinity. All this makes Murnau the perfect home base for exploring the region. The Murnauer Moos bog and the beautiful lakes – Staffelsee, Riegsee and Froschhauser See – are all but a stone's throw away.
