LET YOUR FEET TAKE YOU BACK IN HISTORY

A journey into the past, back to yourself or simply into nature – immerse yourself in the diversity of our theme trails. The signposted routes lead you in the tracks of the Romans and the Bavarian kings, on the search for the meaning of life or simply to take in the unspoiled and breathtaking natural landscape of the alpine foothills. Every one of these routes will enchant you in its own unique way.

Barfußpfad (Barefoot Path)

On your feet! While walking along the Barefoot Path that circles the Hochried Clinic, you will experience nature with all your senses, for example, by walking over pine cones, soft moss or through the cool wet water of a stream. This is a most special experience. The path leads you through a small wooded area, benches invite you to pause and birds invite you to a concert.

The Barefoot Path is ideal for young and old alike. It is easily reached from the Staffelseerundweg (circular trail) or from the premises of the Hochried Clinic. You can download a description of the path in PDF format here.

Königsweg (Kings’ Trail)

Wander on the historic paths of Bavarian royalty and through the small artists' town of Murnau. The Kings' Trail leads to the most beautiful scenic viewpoints of the Blue Land. Majestic trees line the trail, lending the varied landscape forms the fitting frame. This is a hike that will enchant you and, at the same time, satisfy your appetite for knowledge. On the combined nature trail and forest education trail with 17 stations and 17 information pavilions, you will learn all about this historic path through the alpine foothills along with interesting facts about the surrounding natural landscape.

There is no definite record of the kings ever walking on this trail themselves. However, the magnificent scenic viewpoints of the impressive peaks and the deep blue of the lakes make it seem very likely. And even if there are no royal thrones, numerous benches along the Königsweg invite you to pause and take in the stunning panorama. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this pearl of nature.

If you do not wish to explore the Kings Path on your own, you can do so with one of our specially trained visitor guides. You will feel like part of the exciting history of the kings with stories and anecdotes about the era of the Bavarian kings and today's world. We will be glad to provide you with details of dates and terms and conditions.

Kunst-Spaziergang (Art Walk)

The buildings are colourful, reduced to the essential. This describes the paintings by the artist couple, Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, who found Murnau to be a source of inspiration. Their works of art can be put into a context by comparing them with their original motifs on the Art Walk through Murnau. Nine picture boards provide you with a new perspective of the representatives of the Blue Rider movement and Expressionism – at the locations where Kandinsky and Münter set up their easels.

"There, after a short period of agony, I made a giant leap, from depicting nature – more or less in an Impressionist style – to feeling contents, to rendering an abstract. [...]", thus Gabriele Münter wrote in retrospect. The Art Walk is the perfect introduction to help you understand this process of abstraction that culminated in the Expressionist movement. Walk in the tracks of world renowned artists by following our route description. Meditationsweg (Meditation Path)

Embark on a spiritual search for the power spots of the Blue Land. 105 kilometres of marked trails lead you through a gentle, hilly peat bog landscape and past historic monuments where it is easy to reflect on the essence of life.

The Ammergau Alps Meditation Path in the Blue Land begins in Bad Kohlgrub. From there, it leads you to Murnau and then the villages of Uffing, Schöffau and Seehausen. The path continues to Froschhausen and Riegsee on the shores of the Froschhausen and Riegsee lakes, then goes on to Aidling, the Höhlmühle Inn, Hagen, Achrain and Weichs before ending in Ohlstadt. From here, you walk to Heuberg and the Asamklamm gorge, continue to Eschenlohe, the Höllenstein and then Oberau where the Kienbergstraße road takes you to Ettal. This is where the loop closes above the Ettal Abbey and the trails of the Ammergau Alps and the Blue Land meet.

You can choose to wander all alone and intuitively follow your own inner voice or to embark on this search in the safety of a group where you can share the experience. The advantage of sharing this experience is obvious: Jointly reflect on what you have experienced and see the hike from the other participants' eyes to discover things you yourself did not find. Your view becomes clearer, your senses become keener, permitting the horizons of life to open before you.

This experience can be supported by the 84 page publication that was specially developed for the Meditation Path. It contains meditative texts and descriptions of all of the paths. The booklet can be purchased for EUR 3.50 in our shop and at all the Tourist Information Centres in the Blue Land. It is currently only available in German.

Naturerlebnispfad (Nature Experience Trail)

The Nature Experience Trail of Ohlstadt is situated in a nature reserve where visitors can discover endangered indigenous plants and wildlife. The focus here is on birds and grasshoppers, typical inhabitants of the meadows of this wooded area. Besides observing the animals in their natural habitat, you can also learn about them on the interactive information board. This way, you have a good chance of recognising the sounds you have learned about during a hike afterwards.

In collaboration with the Landesbund für Vogelschutz e.V. (State Association for the Protection of Birds), the areas were examined intensively and the results used to create the interpretive trail for the town of Ohlstadt. It is a wonderful example of how a nature reserve and its visitors can exist in harmony with agricultural utilization. Namely, the extensive use of wooded areas preserves the habitat of the flora and fauna of this cultural landscape and simultaneously permits the grazing of livestock.

However, the Nature Experience Trail is not a common grazing area. The common land, which has been cultivated and administered by the association of parties entitled to use the town of Ohlstadt's lands since 1929, was distinguished by NATURA 2000 several years ago. With this project, the European Union aims to establish a network of protected areas in order to preserve the habitat of rare plant and animal species in Europe.
