Murnau has a widely diverse programme of musical events on offer the whole year round. The variation naturally applies to the musical styles – from folks music to jazz and reggae to rock and pop – but it's equally true of the event venues, each with their own special charms. Whether with the Alps as the backdrop or directly on the lake, these are musical highlights bound to captivate. We've summarised these special highlights again for you here.

All event dates and venues are listed in our Calendar of Events, or you can check these out on the website of the event organiser.

Our Highlights

Aufgspuit in the Murnauer Moos – let the music play!

Authentic, unadulterated melodies – that's what you can expect at this traditional music event held in Murnau's peat bog. In the open-air, at the foot of the magnificent alpine backdrop, more than a dozen folk music groups from all parts of Germany and Austria gather every year on the first Sunday in September. Musicians play to audiences at three different locations in Murnau's peat bog – the Drachenstich (the site of the slaying of the dragon), St George's Chapel and the Ähndl inn and chapel. The performance venues are freely inter-changed, thus ensuring a musical surprise is guaranteed.

The Folk Music Open-Air started back in 2007 as part of the Jugendkulturtage (young people's cultural week) hosted in Murnau, and its fan base has been growing ever since. It all comes down to the enjoyment of top-class music and the musical interaction between the performers.

The afternoon's entertainment is organised by the Murnau Tourist Information Centre and the Camerloher Musikschule (a local music school), under the artistic direction of Anita Staltmeier-Grube. Hungry visitors are catered for at the beer garden of the Ähndl inn, where Bavarian snacks and hearty dishes are on the menu. And the women of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen chapter of the Bavarian Association of Farmers, treat visitors to homemade cakes, fresh fried Schmalznudeln and coffee from Murnau's coffee roasting house.

  • Date: every first Sunday in September, 12 noon to 5 PM
  • Admission fee: EUR 5 per person
  • Event venue: Murnauer Moos peat bog – Drachenstich, St. Georg Chapel, Ähndl;
    in poor weather: Griesbräu, Obermarkt 37 (brewery open to public, and in the large event room) and Kaffeehaus Krönner, Obermarkt 8

KultURKNALL

Every year kultURKNALL takes to interchanging venues to present a colourful cultural potpourri of performances: from regional bands to nationally and internationally known names. Once privy to insiders alone, today a great audience attraction, the festival now captivates people of all generations. It has achieved this by enlisting ever larger numbers of big name artistic and musical acts of every genre into the Blue Land, since the very first kultURKNALL in 1994.

The underlying idea: to provide financial assistance to a children's home in Romania with a charity event hosted over several days. At the outset, the Menschen Helfen e.V. (an aid organisation) relied on the support of artists who waived their appearance fees. Bands came from the local alpine region and the Munich area, delivering a unique programme of events featuring an unparalleled range of cultural diversity. And it has been held every year since.

"grenzenlos" world music festival

Music is one language, but it contains such variations; its unites people, regardless of their differences. Once a year, Murnau am Staffelsee is a place for musicians throughout the world to come and meet their audience: at the grenzenlos (means without borders) world music festival.

This musical event dates back to 2000. It's one of the few festivals to dedicate its programme to one theme, to emphasise interconnections, while inviting audiences to embark on making musical discoveries. Across the three-day event, artists use sounds and songs to express their links with their tradition, their culture and their roots. Murnau am Staffelsee becomes home to a rich treasure trove of musical delights, all gathered here under the umbrella of grenzenlos. Prepare to be enthralled by world music of every genre.

The grenzenlos world music festival is organised by the state broadcaster, Bayerischer Rundfunk.
