The art of the "Blue Rider" has had a significant influence on the region around lake Staffelsee and has made it well-known. Franz Marc referred to this region as he "Blue Land", on the one hand because blue was his favourite colour, and on the other hand because the blue skies, typical for this region, the surrounding mountains and lakes with their atmospheric hues at certain times of the day, inspired him.

But other artists too, took, and still take, delight in the unique landscape, its people and in the cultural diversity. To this day, artists` studios and galleries are proof of the lively art scene in Murnau.
