The market town of Murnau on the Staffelsee Lake is the beating heart of the Blue Land. With a population of around 11,000 inhabitants, it may not be one of the largest towns, but it is nevertheless a cultural and economic magnet within the region.
The museums in the heart of town, the varied programme of concert and theatrical performances and the numerous events, such as the grenzenlos world music festival, KunstNacht Murnau (Night of the Arts) and Aufgspuit im Murnauer Moos, a time-honoured folk-music festival, attract both visitors from the surrounding areas as well as tourists from all over the world.
The modern community that lies between the historical walls is a place where locals and visitors alike can really spoil themselves. A market town with a long commercial history, it's one of the popular shopping destinations within the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There are shopping sprees to be had in the stylish boutiques and well-stocked specialist outlets, and then there are the charming Wednesday weekly markets, the Michaeli Market and the atmospheric Christmas Market.
Cafés and restaurants are very popular. Lovers of traditional Bavarian cuisine or modern culinary delights will be spoilt for choice. But the enjoyment is not limited to the taste buds, surrounded as we are here by the enchanting old town and the beautiful panorama of the landscape in the foothills of the Alps. The lively town centre is a popular destination for people to meet with friends in the fine bars and restaurants.
The town of Murnau on the Staffelsee Lake is a great place for recreation, whether for energetic, sporting activities out in the surrounding countryside, in the leisure and sports facilities or at the public beach, as well as for those seeking gentle relaxation in the Murnauer Moos, a peat bog nature reserve, or in one of Murnau's pleasant parks.
