The third Sunday of Advent is the traditional date for the Christmas Market in Murnau am Staffelsee. The snow-covered mountain backdrop and the festive atmosphere in the seasonally decorated Ober- und Untermarkt (Upper and Lower Market) area of the town centre make this one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets anywhere in Bavaria.
Visitors to Murnau's Christmas Market can expect not just a "real-life crib", but a concert to stir the soul too. The numerous market stalls offer tasteful gift ideas and charming home-made toys. The stall holders only sell handmade products from their own workshops or local manufacturers. Foodies will delight in culinary treats like roasted chestnuts and baked apples. Santa Claus himself, pulled by a horse-drawn sleigh, will light up the children's eyes, as will the alpacas and the children's carousel. The market opens at 2 PM, and admission is free.
Be prepared to be enchanted. Enjoy the atmospheric scene and the Christmassy feeling right in the heart of Murnau's Old Town. All of those unable to enjoy this Christmas wonder, can still visit the Hüttendorf (hut village), which will be open in front of the Town Hall from 26 November to 23 December.
