: Wassily Kadinsky

The beauty of the landscape and the small-town charm attracted world-famous artists like Wassily Kandinsky to Murnau. Here, the painters of the "Blue Rider" opened a new chapter in art-history, the dramatist Ödön von Horvàth wrote world-literature, and the art nouveau architect Emanuel von Seidl enhanced the town`s appearance.

Traditional behind-glass painting can be found in the local heritage museums of Seehausen and Uffing as well as in the annual August exhibition "Murnauer Hinterglasmaler". In addition to the regional development of this art, the Schloßmuseum Murnau demonstrates its diversity by exhibiting a variety of international works.

The Schloßmuseum Murnau also houses the worldwide largest, permanent exhibition of paintings by Gabriele Münter and the only exhibition on the dramatist Ödön von Horvàth with a retrospective of his years in Murnau (1923 - 1933).

Today too, studios and galeries are proof of the lively art scene in Murnau.

Due to its significance in art-history and its continuous lively art scene, Murnau was awarded membership by the association of European artistsvillages, EuroArt (Internet: www.artistsvillages.net).
